My First Shepherd

Everything I wish someone had told me before bringing home a herding dog. Real experiences. Honest mistakes. Practical wisdom earned the hard way.

Hi, I am Diane.

Fifteen years ago, I made a decision that terrified me. I brought home a Rough Collie puppy named Winston while teaching full-time, living in a small house with a postage-stamp yard, and having absolutely no idea what I was doing.

Every book I read made it sound manageable. Every breeder assured me the breed was gentle. What nobody mentioned was the first month of chaos, the training setbacks, the moments when I sat on my kitchen floor wondering what I had gotten myself into.

Winston is now six. He is also a certified therapy dog who comes to my classroom every day. Hazel, our Border Collie mix rescue, joined us four years ago. I am not an expert. I am a teacher who learned most of this through trial, error, and a lot of tears.

This site exists because I could not find what I needed when I started. Not training manuals written by professionals. Real stories from real people who made real mistakes and figured it out anyway.
